The Survival of Small, Distinct Points, 2018
Punctum is an object or image that jumps out at the viewer within a photograph- ‘that accident which pricks, bruises me.’
-Roland Barthes
Inspired by the term punctum coined by Roland Barthes in his book Camera Lucida, this work transforms straight photography into radial compositions as a means to conceptually address the medium’s current tendencies towards abstraction. Hence, that notion of punctum, as well as my personal interest in straight photography are emphasized through the circular windows that reveal the original image and indicate a particular something that pricked me as I visually consumed each photograph years after its making.
